Slow Down, Amsterdam Style: Why Pulitzer Amsterdam Is the Canal-Side Home for Your Next Event
There is a particular pleasure in watching the world go by from a canal boat, Amsterdam’s grand old houses sliding past at a pace that no meeting agenda ever allows. It’s this rhythm, unhurried, storied and faintly theatrical, that Pulitzer Amsterdam has built its entire identity around. And now, freshly named No. 1 Hotel in Amsterdam in the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2026, it’s a rhythm the rest of the world has caught onto too.
We recently spent a few days on site at Pulitzer Amsterdam, walking its corridors, testing its event spaces and drifting down the Prinsengracht on its century-old boat, to see for ourselves why this boutique canal-side hotel has become one of the most compelling venues in Europe for incentives, conferences and celebrations alike. Here’s what we found, and why we think it deserves a serious look for your next programme.
A Hotel Built From Twenty-Five Stories, Literally
Ever since the Dutch Golden Age, the canal houses of Amsterdam have played host to blossoming creativity, expanding trade and grand gatherings. Pulitzer Amsterdam keeps that tradition quietly alive. The hotel is not one building but twenty-five, a run of interconnecting 17th- and 18th-century canal houses stitched together into a single, sprawling property that still feels like a warren of individual homes rather than a hotel.
That history has a name attached to it. Peter Pulitzer founded the hotel in the 1970s and over the following three decades kept buying up the neighbouring townhouses until the collection reached its current twenty-five. A major renovation in 2015 and 2016, led by Jacu Strauss, Creative Director of Lore Group, reimagined the interiors with inspiration pulled from Dutch old masters, the tradition of Delft pottery and the city’s contemporary art scene. The result balances a deep respect for the building’s heritage with a playful, contemporary spirit – nothing here takes itself too seriously, which is exactly the point.
For event planners, that patchwork of houses is more than a design quirk. Every room, corridor and staircase has a story behind it, and that texture is easy to weave into an event narrative, whether that’s a themed dinner drawing on the hotel’s art collection or simply giving delegates a reason to talk about where they’re staying.
Rooms With a Story of Their Own
The hotel’s 225 guest rooms are all unique, a direct result of that patchwork history, and the design carries the same jewel-toned, quietly theatrical spirit throughout; peaked headboards nodding to the city’s gabled rooftops, accents of lime green, dark teal and purple and beds that feel like sleeping on a very soft cloud.
We were lucky enough to be given one of the waterfront rooms overlooking the Prinsengracht, where original features and tall windows framed postcard-worthy views of canal boats drifting past. If you’re looking for a room that makes an impression for VIP delegates or incentive winners, the five Collector’s Suites are the ones to know: the Flower Collector’s inspired by Amsterdam’s flower markets and another by the Netherlands’ rich pottery history were our favourites. Several come with their own private canal-side entrance, a small but memorable touch of exclusivity for guests who’d rather slip in from the water than the lobby.
The Slowest, Most Storied Boat in Amsterdam
If there was one highlight of our visit, it was stepping onto The Tourist, Pulitzer’s century-old boat. Its polished teak hull dates back to the early 1900s and the boat reportedly once took Winston Churchill for a spin. Today it’s captained by Nils, who spends the journey sharing stories of the city’s history as the boat drifts down still water at a pace that feels genuinely out of step with modern travel, in the best way.
Available for exclusive private hire for groups of up to 12, it’s an easy way to turn a standard incentive itinerary into something delegates will still be talking about long after they’ve gone home. There’s something quietly powerful about giving a group permission to slow down, even briefly, before the next session or dinner.
A Refined Escape, Even in the Middle of a Programme
Tucked behind the hotel’s façade is a secret the streets outside don’t give away: a hidden inner courtyard, formed where two rows of canal houses meet, transformed into a stylish outdoor living space. It functions as a tranquil break-out area for events, available for exclusive or semi-private hire, and feels like exactly the kind of hush a delegate needs between back-to-back sessions.
The wider Pulitzer Garden offers the same sense of retreat on a larger scale; a green, sheltered pocket that feels a world away from Amsterdam’s bustle, despite being right in the middle of it. And for those planners looking to build in a moment of pure indulgence, the hotel’s beauty and wellness house, adds a further layer of calm to any programme.
Event Spaces Built for Storytelling, Not Just Meetings
Pulitzer Amsterdam offers ten distinct social spaces and rooms for meetings, conferences and celebrations, each with its own character drawn from the building’s history. Highlights include:
The Garden Room opens through an art-filled foyer into a conservatory at the heart of the hotel’s tranquil gardens. Large traditional Dutch windows flood the space with natural light, bringing the feel of the outdoors into any meeting or event.
The Saxenburg Room is the hotel’s most opulent space, entered through a private door on the Keizersgracht and a marble hall beyond. A hand-painted ceiling, a focal chandelier and garden views set the scene for up to 75 guests. The kind of room that transports a gathering back to a golden era of grace and splendour.
The Saxenburg Galleries (Galleries I and II) can run independently or open into one seamless space, with original features set against walls painted in Hague Blue (a shade pulled straight from the great Dutch museums) and hung with works from the Pulitzer art collection. Grand chandeliers and generous windows draw the eye out toward the Keizersgracht canal and the houses beyond.
The Copper Rooms, reached via a winding staircase above restaurant Jansz, trace back to the building’s original owner, the 17th-century copper merchant Volkert Jansz. Original wooden beams and views over the Reestraat give these multi-purpose rooms a timeless, characterful backdrop for smaller gatherings.
And Afterwards? A Drink on the Canal, and the World Going By
The best events don’t end when the agenda does, and Pulitzer Amsterdam location delivers that better than most. Step outside after a long day of sessions and you’re already in the Negen Straatjes – the Nine Little Streets – a UNESCO-listed canal district thick with artisan coffee shops, independent boutiques and some of the city’s best-loved brown cafés (favourites include Cafe ‘t Papeneiland and Winkle 43). It’s an easy stroll to the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum, but the real pleasure is simpler: a drink canalside and slice of apple-pie, watching the boats and the bikes go by as the evening settles in.
For groups, that same spirit translates easily into programming; cycling through the city streets, guided walking tours that pause at cheese shops and traditional snack bars, or a boat cruise through the canals. The goal, always, is to let delegates experience Amsterdam as more than a backdrop: as a story they get to be part of, even briefly.
Sustainability That Runs Deeper Than a Policy Page
For planners weighing ESG credentials as part of their venue decision, Pulitzer Amsterdam has real substance behind it. As part of Lore Group, the hotel has partnered with the Made Blue Foundation, funding 100 litres of clean drinking water for every room night sold; water directed to communities facing scarcity across Asia, Africa and the Americas. Guests are given the choice of where their contribution goes, turning what could be an abstract sustainability line item into something tangible: a household somewhere gaining a full day of clean water, one occupied night at a time.
That commitment sits within a broader governance framework aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, measured and reported quarterly through the FuturePlus framework, which tracks performance against 200 to 250 metrics drawn from recognised certification schemes, ESG indexes and global best practice. Pulitzer Amsterdam also holds Green Glove certification. For clients where sustainability reporting matters this is a venue that can back up the story with numbers.
Why Amsterdam Keeps Winning for MICE
Amsterdam’s enduring appeal for conferences and incentives comes down to something refreshingly simple: it’s easy to get to, and even easier to enjoy once you’re there. Frequent flights connect London, Manchester, Birmingham and other UK airports directly to Schiphol, alongside routes from New York, Chicago and other major US hubs. For a more sustainable option, Eurostar runs a direct rail connection from London straight into the city centre, with high-speed rail links to Paris and Brussels besides.
Once there, Amsterdam’s compact footprint does the rest. Trams, buses and bikes connect the city efficiently, and a walk along the canals turns a transfer between venue and hotel into part of the experience rather than a chore. For international groups, that ease of access, paired with a UNESCO World Heritage backdrop, makes Amsterdam one of the strongest MICE destinations in Europe, and Pulitzer Amsterdam one of its most distinctive addresses.
