Hotel Kong Arthur: The Copenhagen Hotel That Puts Hygge on the Programme

Cozy Hour, Nordic Breakfasts and Lakeside Runs: Why Hotel Kong Arthur Makes Your Delegates Feel Like Locals

There’s a moment in Copenhagen, somewhere around five o’clock, when the whole city seems to exhale. Bikes glide home along the lakes, candles flicker in windows and the working day softens into something warmer. At Hotel Kong Arthur, that moment has a name, and a glass of wine to go with it.

Sitting in the hotel’s buzzy lobby last month, we noticed something unusual. People were talking to… gasp… strangers. Not a few polite nods. Proper conversation. On a weekday. In a hotel lobby.

The reason is Cozy Hour. Every afternoon from 5pm to 6pm, guests gather in the lobby to sit around the fire place in winter, or drift out to the terrace in summer. There’s a complimentary glass of wine, beer or something non-alcoholic. But the drink isn’t really the point. It’s the excuse to sit, stay and chat to whoever is next to you. It’s Danish hygge, served on the house. And for event planners, it’s a masterclass in how to design a programme.

We stayed at Hotel Kong Arthur and did a full site visit with Gitte Neerup, the hotel’s Head of Sales. Afterwards she suggested we pop back down for Cozy Hour. Honestly? We weren’t expecting much. Our usual lobby experience sits somewhere between quiet and sterile. This one was jumping.

Here’s what we learned about why this hotel works so well for meetings, incentives and small conferences, and why your delegates will leave feeling like locals.

Live like a Copenhagener: a welcome without the check-in desk

The Danish way of living starts the moment you arrive. There’s no queue at a long reception counter. Instead, hosts in relaxed uniforms welcome you by the bar, laptops in hand. It feels less like checking in and more like arriving at a friend’s place.

That relaxed welcome sets the tone for the whole stay. When arriving feels easy, you unwind straight away. The hotel becomes a place to slow down, not just somewhere to sleep or work. On a packed event schedule or incentive programme, where delegates are constantly “on”, that matters more than it sounds. A chance to breathe, reset and maybe meet someone new is valued far more than we realise.

Why Cozy Hour is a lesson in programme design

Most delegates spend an event being rushed from one agenda slot to the next. Scheduled networking sessions rarely spark real conversation. An hour where conversation happens on its own often does.

Cozy Hour is the perfect way to end the working day and start the evening. Build it into your programme between the last session and dinner and let the hotel do the ice-breaking for you.

A building with care in its bones

The welcome isn’t a marketing line. It’s built into the fabric of the place. Look closely at the staircase bannister and you’ll spot raised wooden buttons. They were added to stop young residents sliding down it. The building dates from 1882, when it was a home and dormitory for apprentices and young tradesmen. It still looks after people starting out today, with on-site accommodation for employees to make city life a little more affordable.

The hotel has been led by women at executive level since 2013. Hospitality, solidarity and care run through the family traditions here, for guests, colleagues and business partners alike. Sticks’n’Sushi, now a much-loved Danish restaurant group, got its start with the hotel’s support.

Eat like a Copenhagener: a New Nordic breakfast worth getting up for

One of our highlights was breakfast. And we don’t say that lightly. Occupational hazard: we’ve eaten more hotel buffets than we care to count.

There’s no identikit continental spread here. Instead, it’s a celebration of New Nordic cuisine built on local, organic and seasonal produce. You get a taste of what a Copenhagener might actually eat at home:

  • Coffee in cups made by a local ceramicist
  • Ham, salami and cheese from organic farms
  • Jams made from local, seasonal fruit and berries
  • Butter from local dairy farmers
  • Bread from a local baker using organic flour
  • Seasonal berries in place of imported orange juice

Birdsong plays softly in the background. And the waffle station? That’s where the best chat happens. It’s a small window into the hotel’s bigger ambition: to run as sustainably as possible, for the good of guests and the planet.

Dinner without leaving the courtyard

Three restaurants choices makes group dining refreshingly simple:

  • Sticks’n’Sushi: the original restaurant is right next door, and it can be included in your meetings package
  • La Rocca: Italian, at the end of the courtyard
  • Pintxos: Spanish small plates, also across the courtyard

For a group, that means a choice of three dinners with no coach transfers and no taxis required.

Meet like a Copenhagener: meeting rooms for 2 to 70

The meeting rooms are across the three-storey building in the courtyard, tucked between Hotel Kong Arthur and its sister hotel, Ibsens. It feels separate from the bedrooms, but it’s only a few steps across the cobbles.

There are seven rooms in total. The hotel specialises in meetings of 2 to 60 people, and the largest room seats up to 70 theatre-style. That makes it ideal for board meetings, leadership offsites, workshops and small conferences.

Full-service meeting packages come at fixed prices, which keeps budgets tidy. Hybrid meetings are supported. The same warmth you feel in the lobby carries through to the events team, with a conference host and technicians on hand for everything from AV to catering.

Move like a Copenhagener: the lakes, a running club and everything on foot

Hotel Kong Arthur sits in the Nansensgade neighbourhood, right in the centre. But this is the Copenhagen that locals actually live in, not the one on the postcards.

The city lakes are steps from the front door. They’re perfect for delegates who want to stretch their legs before or after a long day in the meeting room. Copenhageners are brilliant at work-life balance, and they build in time simply to be outdoors. Your group can do the same.

Want to mix with locals? Sign up for the Arthurs Running Club, a 5km run through central Copenhagen alongside other guests and the hotel’s own managers. It’s a fun, low-key team activity that costs nothing to organise.

Bikes are available to hire from the hotel, but you won’t need them. Torvehallerne food market, the lakes and the old town are all within walking distance. Tivoli Gardens, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, is an easy stroll too.

After all that walking, or a long day of sessions, the on-site Ni’mat Spa is an Asian-inspired haven for anyone who needs to decompress.

Design like a Copenhagener: a stylish friend’s home, not a hotel

The interiors are put together the way Copenhageners design their own homes. Danish design classics. Warm minimalism. Nothing flashy, everything considered.

Original wooden beams and exposed brickwork keep the 1882 character. Modern furniture and a rotating collection of work by Danish artists bring it up to date. Spot something you love on the wall? Many pieces are for sale.

The overall effect is residential rather than institutional. It feels like staying with a particularly stylish Copenhagen friend.

This is a hotel where you’ll spend more time out of your room than in it. Even so, the 214 bedrooms show how Scandinavian design translates into proper rest. Warmth and softness run throughout, with every choice made to help guests sleep well and wake up restored.

For delegates coming off a long travel day or a heavy conference schedule, that’s not a nice-to-have. It’s the difference between a flat second morning and a sharp one.

Why we’d book it

If you want an event hotel that mixes business with pleasure, practical with personality and gives your guests a real sense of place, Hotel Kong Arthur is it.

Meeting rooms, three restaurants, a private courtyard, a much-loved spa and, of course, Cozy Hour. Your guests will relax the moment they walk through the door, and leave feeling like locals.

That’s hygge. And it’s hard to fake.

🌱 Sustainability note: Hotel Kong Arthur has held Green Key certification since 2009. The breakfast is built around local, organic and seasonal produce, the building is a restored 19th-century home rather than a new-build, and Copenhagen is reachable from London entirely by rail.

Our honest take: It’s a brilliant fit for groups of up to 50-60 who want atmosphere over a ballroom. If you’re planning a plenary for 100 or more, this isn’t your venue, but for smaller groups looking for a personal experience it could be your hotel.

Find your next venue with Evolve

We don’t choose venues from brochures. Every week our team is out on site visits, showcases and FAM trips. So we know what a space is really like to be in: where the light falls, how a room sounds when it’s full and where the Wi-Fi gives up.

That’s what our venue finding service is built on:

  • First-hand knowledge. Our recommendations come from somewhere we’ve seen for ourselves.
  • Beyond the ballroom. Hidden gems, historic spaces, new openings and unusual venues across Europe.
  • Lower-impact. Venues you can reach by train, restored buildings and genuine sustainability credentials. Always a bonus, never a lecture.

Tell us your dates, group size and brief, and we’ll send you a shortlist of venues we’ve walked through ourselves.
