Go Sustainable Study Trip Switzerland
Sustainable MICE Travel Takes a Giant Leap:
UK Event Professionals Experience Flight-Free Journey to Switzerland
London, UK – April 2025
The hum of a high-speed train. The breathtaking shift in landscapes. The ease of stepping off the platform and straight into the heart of a destination. This wasn’t just a journey; it was a statement.
With travel responsible for up to 80% of an event’s carbon footprint, more delegates are open to alternatives to flying, but for many, the logistics of group train travel across Europe still feel daunting. Could overland travel really work for business events? And could the journey itself become part of the experience?
That was the shared vision we worked on with Inge Bauwens from Eurostar who bought in Audrey Monrôty from TGV Lyria and Metropolis DMC to craft a smooth, joined-up travel experience. Switzerland, with its world-class rail network and leadership in sustainable transport, quickly emerged as the ideal destination and Reto Konrad from SCIB (Swiss Convention & Incentive Bureau), Gregory Baur from Zurich Tourism and Tiffany Peter from Lucerne Convention Bureau were quick to come on board, seeing the alignment with the second edition of their Go Sustainable programme.
And that’s how the Go Sustainable Study Trip by train was born: a collaborative journey with 35 event professionals, designed to showcase Switzerland’s sustainable event credentials and prove that low-impact travel can deliver a richer, more connected experience. A group trip that didn’t just talk about sustainability but activity actively demonstrated it.
The study trip earned a Distinction in ESG from sustainability benchmark specialists event:decision, proving that FAM trips can be designed to meaningfully influence industry practices while aligning with Environmental, Social and Governance goals.
A Blueprint for Sustainable MICE Travel
The trip wasn’t just about discussing sustainability; it was about proving that a viable, low-carbon alternative exists, one that aligns with the growing demand for corporate ESG commitments and more conscious, convenient travel choices.
Trains and Switzerland are an inseparable pairing, as iconic as the mountains they climb. But beyond its famed rail network, Switzerland is a global leader in sustainability, offering not just eco-friendly transport but also green-certified hotels, responsible venues and locally rooted experiences, making it an obvious choice for climate-conscious MICE events.
Bringing this vision to life required collaboration. Eurostar, TGV Lyria, Metropolis DMC, Switzerland Convention & Incentive Bureau (SCIB), Lucerne Convention Bureau, Zurich Convention Bureau, and Evolve Events joined forces to create a seamless, flight-free itinerary that demonstrated both accessibility and sustainability. Zurich and Lucerne weren’t just hosts; they were case studies in how event destinations can lead the way in sustainable solutions.
And the numbers speak for themselves. The carbon savings from London to Zurich alone were staggering: 11kg per passenger by train versus 195kg by plane; the equivalent of lighting the Eiffel Tower for an hour versus two full days.
Why Switzerland for Sustainable Events?
Switzerland has long been associated with punctual trains, alpine beauty and efficiency – but when it comes to sustainability, it’s also quietly leading the way.
The country ranks consistently high in global sustainability indexes thanks to its clean energy, reliable public transport, waste management and policies that promote biodiversity. But it’s not just about government policy. Across the business events sector, venues, hotels, DMCs and local suppliers are all working together to reduce impact and maximise positive outcomes for people and planet.
It also helps that Switzerland is compact and incredibly well connected by public transport. Delegates can glide between cities, lakes and mountains without ever needing to hire a car or take a domestic flight.
Add to this a culture of innovation, high service standards and an appetite for immersive experiences, and you have a destination perfectly poised to host sustainable, memorable events.
The Journey: A Seamless, Sustainable Experience
Travel between London and mainland Europe by train has never been easier. With Eurostar’s recent merger with Thalys, connections beyond key hub cities are now more seamless, and booking an entire journey, including onward travel with TGV Lyria, can all be done in one place.
For groups, Eurostar makes the experience effortless, thanks to its dedicated MICE service. Our group enjoyed a personalised check-in and priority boarding before settling into their exclusive carriage. Breakfast showcased locally sourced, sustainable ingredients, setting the tone for a journey built on conscious choices. And what better way to bring people together than with a little friendly competition? A Switzerland-themed quiz had teams vying for victory, turning the journey itself into an icebreaker. By the time we pulled into Paris, strangers had become teammates, proof that the event had already begun before we even reached our destination.
Eurostar is making sustainable group travel more appealing than ever. Inge Bauwens, Senior Lead, Eurostar for Business & MICE, explains:
“Eurostar’s offering for business travel goes beyond just transportation. We provide exclusive hire options and onboard activations, like the ice-breaker quiz we hosted for this trip. It’s about making the journey part of the event, allowing groups to connect before they even arrive. With our expanded network now reaching beyond hub cities, Eurostar offers an even more sustainable way for businesses to travel across Europe.”
In Paris, multiple transfer options exist between stations, and for this trip, a rapeseed oil-powered bus, organised by Metropolis DMC, ensured a smooth and sustainable ride to Gare de Lyon. From there, TGV Lyria whisked the group through France toward Basel. Three hours of eating, chatting, drinking, reading and gazing out the window later, the majestic Swiss mountains rose on the horizon. A surprise sighting of rhinos near Basel Zoo added a moment of delight, while mindful colouring sessions and a curated playlist created space for informal connection.
On arrival in Basel, delegates were directed to platform 7 with a bespoke Go Sustainable sign and welcomed aboard the iconic Red Arrow train, a 1930s vintage railcar that once carried dignitaries and celebrities. Today, it offers a unique charter experience with panoramic windows, Swiss wines and local snacks. The experience itself was unforgettable, not least as we got to sit up front with the driver, with scenic views underscoring the joy of slow, sustainable travel.
“The 1930s carriage elevated the whole journey. This is the kind of unique, premium experience guests wouldn’t access on their own. It made train travel not just viable but desirable.” said Becky Dicks, Event Concept.
Arriving in Lucerne with a carbon footprint approx 94% lower than flying, participants saw first-hand how sustainable travel can strengthen connections and deliver standout impact.
Lucerne: A Showcase of Regeneration and Responsible Luxury
The first stop on the journey was Lucerne, a postcard-perfect city framed by snow-capped mountains and a glistening lake. Delegates were welcomed with an innovative twist: the trip itinerary revealed via a QR code printed in edible ink on an apple. The sustainable gesture sparked instant conversation and set the tone for a trip full of thoughtful detail.
Lucerne welcomed the group with open arms, showcasing its commitment to sustainability through its green initiatives and stunning natural surroundings. After checking into the Hotel Waldstätterhof, a charming property known for its central location and eco-conscious approach, the group set off for an evening culinary adventure at Neubad, a former public swimming pool turned cultural centre, reborn as a co-working space, gallery and event venue. It’s a standout example of how regeneration can preserve heritage, support community, and offer inspiring venues for business events.
At Continental Park Hotel, sustainability was subtle but ever-present: milk from an alpine farm they helped rebuild, bottled water charges donated to clean water projects via Wasser für Wasser. Even the grand Mandarin Oriental, recently opened after restoration, serves water drawn fresh from the lake. Yes, it’s that clean.
The next day, the group set out to discover Lucerne’s sustainable side, beginning with a guided walking tour that uncovered the city’s hidden green spaces and showcased social sustainability in action. Medieval architecture, clean mountain air and lake views were just the beginning. Winding through lesser-known pockets of nature, they saw firsthand how urban greenery plays a role in well-being and biodiversity. One small detail stood out: the old town fountains provide drinkable water – free, clean and accessible. A quiet symbol of Swiss sustainability in action.
Next, a networking cruise with local Swiss partners aboard the MS Cirrus, a vessel designed for reduced fuel consumption, offered a tranquil journey across the lake, reinforcing Switzerland’s commitment to clean mobility. After docking, delegates transferred to Vitznau and caught the Rigi Bahn, the world’s first cogwheel railway and now one of Switzerland’s most climate-conscious. Powered by hydroelectricity and with rigorous commitments to biodiversity and energy efficiency, it’s a scenic and sustainable ride to the top, highlighting the country’s seamless integration of sustainable transport and wellness as the group took in sweeping lake views framed by towering peak. At the summit, delegates were welcomed for a Kirsch tasting hosted in a cosy chalet by a local distiller whose family has been making cherry spirit for generations.
Sustainability in Lucerne wasn’t just stated, it was woven into every experience.
Zurich: Where Innovation Meets Responsibility
The final leg of the journey took delegates to Zurich, a city where innovation meets sustainability at every turn. Zurich is Europe’s fifth-busiest station hub and an impressive introduction to arguably Switzerland’s hippest city. Its well-preserved historic core contrasts beautifully with the reinvigorated post-industrial spaces of Zurich West, a thriving area that epitomises innovation and sustainable transformation.
Arriving by train, the group checked into the 25hours Hotel, located in the vibrant Zurich West district, a former industrial area now transformed into a hub of creativity, featuring buzzing clubs, ambitious start-ups, and contemporary museums. The hotel’s playful design, featuring sport-themed interiors, reflected the district’s dynamic atmosphere.
That evening, they experienced one of Zurich’s most talked-about dining destinations: Restaurant Elmira, where sustainability meets fine dining. Located in the basement of a former silo on the Löwenbräu brewery site, Elmira champions seasonality and local sourcing, with an open kitchen that turns regional ingredients into innovative dishes and a menu rooted in plant-based ingredients, hyper-local sourcing and creative technique, this Michelin Green Star restaurant reflects the values of the trip. The food throughout the study trip was vegetarian, showcasing innovative, plant-based alternatives.
The next day, the group split into two dynamic tours: one walking, the other running. The walkers visited FREITAG’s headquarters, where the brand’s signature recycled bags are made from upcycled truck tarps, , seat belts, and bicycle inner tubes, highlighting Zurich’s dedication to circular economy practices. Meanwhile, the runners followed the Limmat River, taking in the city’s green spaces and sustainable urban design. Both groups reconvened at St. Jakob bakery, a social enterprise supporting individuals with disabilities, for a delicious treat and a meaningful conversation on community-driven businesses.
Later a Circular Economy Workshop hosted by the Zurich Convention Bureau offered another chance to dig into sustainability in event planning, exploring the practical “5 R” framework: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle. After the workshop, delegates put their learnings into action with a hands-on cooking class tackling one of the most pressing issues in sustainability: food waste. The hands-on experience highlighted how small, thoughtful changes can make a big difference in reducing food waste. The morning finished with a family-style meal where everyone shared their creations—a true celebration of sustainability, creativity and community.
The finale of the trip was a vintage apéritif tram ride through the city, offering stunning views of Zurich’s sustainable transport infrastructure. The evening culminated with a dinner at Haus zum Rüden, Zurich’s oldest restaurant, where guests enjoyed delicious Swiss fare, a live traditional folk band, and, of course, a few glasses of local wine. It was the perfect end to a journey that showcased the intersection of culture, sustainability, and connection, proving that sustainability isn’t just about eco-friendly practices, it’s also about enjoying life to its fullest.
An Industry Shaping What’s Next
As the group boarded the return trains to Paris and then London, one thing was clear: sustainable travel isn’t just possible, for many it’s now preferable. By seamlessly integrating rail, local transport, and sustainable venues, Zurich and Lucerne have positioned themselves as leading destinations for the MICE market. The trip was more than an educational experience; it was a call to action.
For event professionals, the message is clear: every choice matters; from how we travel to where we go and how we design events that leave a lasting, positive impact. The tools for change are already here. It’s up to the industry to embrace them; one journey, one destination and one thoughtfully designed event at a time.
Go Sustainable wasn’t a passive study trip; it was a proof of concept. A trip where sustainability wasn’t a side note but the lens through which everything was designed.
The numbers spoke volumes. By taking the train, each traveller saved 184kg of CO₂ compared to flying.
“This trip highlights the power of collaboration within the MICE industry and demonstrates how Switzerland is not only leading in sustainable tourism but offering a model for global destinations to follow.” said Reto Konrad, Manager at SCIB UK & Ireland. “By showcasing the ease of sustainable travel options and our commitment to eco-friendly venues, we are paving the way for a greener future in the MICE sector.”
As we returned to London, there was a shared feeling: that we’d not only experienced something exceptional, but something replicable. As Charlie Pepperell, Business Development Manager, From Now said: “It felt like a working model of what the future of sustainable events could look like, and left me feeling hopeful for the future.”
What This Trip Proved
For many, the Go Sustainable trip wasn’t just a showcase: it was a shift in mindset.
Event professionals returned inspired by the ease and elegance of low-carbon travel, the creativity of local suppliers, and the possibility of making positive impact part of the brief. Instead of sustainability being an afterthought, it became the starting point.
As Anna Peters, Creative Director of Evolve Events, put it:
“This trip proved that FAMs can do more than inspire; they can influence. By aligning with ESG goals, we showed that sustainable solutions can enhance, not compromise, the event experience.”
