We asked a group of UK event planners to give up flying and travel by rail and ferry from London to Dublin and Kerry.

Along the way, a surprise Welsh male voice choir greeted them at Holyhead, the ferry captain gave them a tour of the bridge, and they screen-printed in Dublin, churned butter at Muckross and found stillness in monastic ruins on Innisfallen Island. Then they flew home, so they could feel the difference for themselves.

Ireland Overland started with a question: what if the journey wasn’t the bit you get through, but the bit that makes the event? By the time we reached Dublin, strangers were swapping war stories like old friends. On the flight home, the headphones went in. 🎧

We think that says it all. If we want better events, we need to design better arrivals 🚂⛴️

This only happened because Dublin and Kerry, two destinations that could easily have been rivals, chose to tell a bigger story together. Thank you to @dublinconventionbureau, @kcbkerry and @meetinireland, to every partner who made the journey work and to the planners who came with open minds and a willingness to try something new.

We were at Syon Park for their winter showcase and seeing a venue in full event mode is the best bit of our job. Floor plans are useful, but nothing beats seeing in action, standing in Robert Adam’s marble hall with a drink in hand or watching a packed bar under a Roman-style dome.
