Deep under the streets of London is a warren of hidden underground venues with extraordinary atmospheres which are available for event hire.
Full of intrigue and surprise these underground venues are steeped in history and create a sense of mystery as guests discover secret spaces. Try holding your event in a subterranean space such as a vaulted cellar, basement night club or even a former W.C. for an atmosphere that will be unique. Here are five of our favourite underground venues that allow you to explore a side of the city which many people simply don’t realise exist.
The Postal Museum
A unique urban space with exposed brick work, vaulted arches with an industrial feel, this venue is an exciting blank canvas venue which is perfect for product launches, receptions and meetings. Guests can explore the space and learn about the history of the postal service but the highlight has to be the opportunity to explore the century-old tunnels on a miniature train.
Dining and drinking in a toilet doesn’t sound like the finest of evenings but, we promise, this is a hidden treasure. WC stands for Wine and Charcuterie, instead of its former use of a Water Closet in Clapham. The venue has been sympathetically transformed with all the original tiling remaining and the initial urinal partitions now used as table tops for the three intimate booths (but obviously all after a thorough sterilisation!). The old glass tiles flood the bar with light, and during the night the low lighting provides a perfect setting for relaxing after-work drinks. This quirky little venue can’t be missed and certainly ticks the unusual venue box. For intimate dinners you can hire out the venue for a private event and give your guests the chance to say they’ve experienced dining in a London lav.
Arguably the best known of all underground venues, it’s for good reason that Village Underground is so popular. Vaulted brick arches with room for 400 guests it’s a truly impressive blank canvas for a wide range of events. Many of the original features of this Victorian warehouse are still intact so you get a real sense of history which contrasts with its hip side demonstrated by a mounted tube carriage marking its Shoreditch location. Great for conferences, product launches and we’ve also hosted some fabulous Christmas parties here too.
Victoria Bath House
The Victorian venue, just two minutes away from Liverpool Street, appears frozen in time, juxtaposed against a backdrop of modern buildings. Given the unexpected nature of its location, you’ll fall for its charms before you even enter. Once inside the Victorian Bath House you leave the modern world outside as you transcend into the splendid interior of this Grade II venue. Originally erected in 1895 to house a Turkish Bath for those working in the city, the building has withstood World War II and office redevelopments projects in the surrounding area. It’s a beautifully preserved venue which has been stunningly restored into a beautiful event space.
Hidden beneath Waterloo station lies a multi-purpose event space that is perfect for atmospheric events. In addition to its ever changing line up of experiential events The Vaults is available for dry hire. With 9 different arches to choose from and an underground maze of tunnels this is a flexible space that appeals to brands that are looking to show their creativity and host unusual events and is a favourite for fashion shows, product launches and performances.
