It don’t mean a thing if you ain’t got that swing….
One of the most important things for us to get right at an event is to make it memorable so that the experience lives on with your guests afterwards. One of the ways to do this is to get the entertainment right. A live act can completely transform your event; it can get guests talking and involved, breaking down barriers and bringing everyone together. Animating your event will bring it to life and create the buzz that the best parties are remembered for. At Evolve Events we’re always on the look-out for the right type of entertainment and this year for our Secret Salon 1920s Christmas Party at Kent House Knightsbridge we’ve found the perfect fit.
The Twin Swing are a vintage dance act who are fun, impressive and cheeky, with glamorous costumes and authentic Charleston style choreography. They can provide a short burst of dance to start set the tone for the night or longer pieces of evening entertainment; these twin dancers have a real passion for what they do and are bound to delight guests.
We spoke to Emily and Jessica from The Twin Swing to find out a bit more about them and their act.
How would you best describe The Twin Swing?
The Twin Swing is a vintage entertainment act providing unique, high quality and professional entertainment for events worldwide.
When did you discover your talents and decide to work together?
As twin sisters we have danced from a very young age. Having graduated with a degree in Dance Theatre at London Studio Centre, we worked professionally within the UK and abroad before setting up our act in 2013. We started with the 1920’s Great Gatsby theme as we have always loved the golden era. As it developed, we continued through the eras and are now launching a 1960s act this year. We also now have amazing twin boy partners for those who are really looking for a show!
How often do you have to practice?
We are constantly in a studio creating new stuff and working on perfecting our more established routines.
What has been your favourite event to work at?
We have loved every event since setting up the Twin Swing but our favourite event has to be our Charleston Tea Dances at the Waldorf Hilton. We are resident dancers and teachers at this event which is bi-monthly and it is always a real pleasure to dance in the wonderful Palm Court with guests we now know by first names now!
Your costumes are amazing – where are they from?
Thank you! We are always on the look-out for new costumes and are magpies when it comes to a bit of glitter! Our 1920’s costume are sourced from a showgirl outlet which makes them pretty unique. But we find a lot online or through recommendations. Our 1940’s/50s costumes are from the wonderful Vivien of Holloway and we love dancing in them.
What is the best – or possibly the worst! – thing about working together as twins?
There are many advantages (and disadvantages) to being a twin! However, the good definitely outway the bad. Working together, we are able to focus completely on our goals and spend a lot of time on completing them. It is lovely to always have someone you know and trust and we genuinely have a laugh together!
Do you have any advice for those starting out in the industry?
We have lots of advice on starting out in the industry and have been guest speakers at the London Studio Centre. The biggest bit of advice is to get up and make it happen. It’s a common misconception that you will graduate from a dance school with an agent and wait for an audition, get it and then get the job. It’s not that easy and you can’t wait for the phone to ring, you must pick it up and call people! Show you are being pro-active by using social media and think outside the box. If you have a creative idea that you are passionate about and believe in, others will believe in it too!
