Since its launch earlier this year The Ned has gained a reputation as London’s coolest hotel.
There are 252 guest rooms to choose from but this hotel is about much more than just where to sleep: with nine restaurants, private rooms, two terraces, a rooftop pool and bars all over the place, this is one lifestyle hotel where the action takes place out of the bedroom.
Formerly home to the headquarters of Midland Bank the Ned is a Grade I-listed Art Deco masterpiece, designed by Sir Edwin ‘Ned’ Lutyens in 1924. Left empty for five years, its modernisation is down to Soho House and Sydell Group who have collaborated on the design, pouring £200 million into the makeover and it has all the attention to detail that you would expect in a boutique hotel but executed on a grand scale.
The designers have incorporated many of the original features into the design with stand out elements including The Vault Bar, a former gold bullion hold complete with 20-tonne safe door which is now transformed into a stunning members bar complete with the old safe-deposit boxes. Our eye however was drawn to the pamper bars next door which would be brilliant for away days or break out activities; with grooming including nails, hair, beard trimming and massages, it’s spa-heaven.
The ground floor is dominated by 92 green verdict pillars in the former Grand Banking Hall which naturally section the room up into eight restaurants including Cecconi’s of Mayfair fame along with Malibu which offers something fresh and healthy. The downstairs centre piece is the old reception desk that is now cleverly available to be used as a live performance stage – performers include Gary Barlow, Tinie Tempah, Ellie Goulding and Gareth Malone, who was accompanied by a 200-piece choir at the launch of the venue.
Upstairs the whole sixth floor has been dedicated to event spaces providing plenty of flexibility for numbers (from 10 to 200 guests) and types of events: the Drawing Room is a great space to hold a reception or welcome guests, the Salon works well for dining and the Tapestry Room would also make a stunning backdrop for a fashion launch, whilst small rooms are also available for meetings. Look out for the details here too as the history of the venue is retained – we love the cupboards that were originally used by Directors to store their Bowler Hats during executive meetings.
With two terraces available for hire and a stunning rooftop (with a heated pool), The Ned opens up new views of London’s rooftops to guests with The Shard, St Paul’s, London Eye and city skyline fading into the distance. The rooftop is only open to members but there is a domed bar for 40 guests which is perfect for those who want to capture that view for Instagram.
