Step inside one of the biggest openings in Shoreditch as The Curtain Hotel opens its doors to show us their new event spaces to hire alongside its private member club with rooftop pool.
With so many new hotel openings this year there is a real buzz in the air for those of us working in the events industry with an assortment of new spaces available to hire. One of the most exciting new offerings comes from hotelier Michael Achenbaum of the Gransevoort Group who has four luxury hotels in New York and has waited ten years to find the perfect space to open his new members club and hotel, The Curtain, in London. Just like the Meat Packaging District in New York, Shoreditch has been described as “desolate and rough” (by the late fashion designer, Alexander McQueen), but has now become a haven for the digital and creative industries and is the perfect location for Achenbaum’s European debut.
We were delighted to be one of the first event agencies to take a look around this new venue as it opened this week and to learn about the new event spaces and wow, were we impressed. Seventy million pounds has been spent on this project and it’s easy to see where it’s gone. Style oozes from every corner and with Steve Lazarides working on the project, the hotel’s styling includes photography on the walls by Mick Rock (Bowie’s official photographer) which sits alongside eclectic local Shoreditch finds. There is an urban edge but it’s mixed in with homely touches that ensure comfort is always the first priority.
The hotel has 120 luxury guest rooms, along with six suites, all of which have a playful feel to the design. We were overcome with nostalgia as we peeked inside the wardrobes papered with posters of music icons of the 70s – reminiscent of our teenage bedroom! The drink trolley with its cut glass tumblers provide a sophisticated touch and the Cockney inspired ‘Bish Bash Bosh’ bathroom products are perfect for a bit of pampering. Some of the rooms come with private balconies over looking the ever changing London skyline and would make a great space for a small drinks party.
In terms of main event spaces, there are two key areas that you need to know about:
★ The Ballroom is 300 square metres, for up to 200 seated and 350 standing, with both an elegant and modern style, featuring the latest Funktion One technology. It’s a flexible space which can be split into 3 separate spaces so you can set it for dinner and then surprise guests with a reveal into a party space later on in the evening.
★ The Screening Room is a unique 40 seat space offering the ultimate exclusive experience; it features an impressive screen, 4 gold framed mirrors that can be converted into TV screens and best of all, it comes with its own in-built bar so you never need to go thirsty in the middle of your favourite film! This multi-functional room is ideal for press events, intimate screenings and corporate presentations.
Food lovers will be delighted to find acclaimed New York chef and restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson will launch his iconic Red Rooster restaurant at the hotel, alongside an all-day taqueria and bar. Samuelsson’s food reflects his diverse background (born in Ethopia, brought up in Sweden before going on to live in Harlem) and the menu celebrates the roots of American cuisine and true Southern soul food, whilst drawing inspiration from Shoreditch’s diverse surroundings: think Tacos consisting of jerk cauliflower, quinoa, avocado mash and picklz.
In addition to the restaurant space there is also a dining room (which could also be used as a meeting space) available for exclusive hire and perfect for intimate dinners for 20 guests.
Located in the heart of London’s most dynamic and inspiring district, The Curtain Hotel, is a welcome addition to the events scene. We love the post-industrial interiors of exposed brick walls, wooden flooring and factory windows combined with pinned-leather seats and custom-designed artwork on the walls. However, the real draw for us is the flexibility of the space; offering event possibilities for large and small events we can see it appealing to both the corporate and private markets. All this, and we haven’t even mentioned the rooftop pool for members, the private garden space and a luxury gym in the basement. This is one hotel that has been designed to put the needs of guests first and we can’t wait to hold events here as we know our clients are going to love it!
