From the moment your disguised guests arrive on the red carpet through to dancing until the early hours a masquerade party has a special ambience.

Here are our top tips on how to create a stylish masquerade soiree.

First Impressions. In the era of e-invitations taking the time to send an elegant invitation shows care and consideration and a printed invitation also gives a nod to the historic hey-day of masquerade balls. Try to individually invite guests to make them feel special. In terms of design think black background with a gothic script in gold and you’re going in the right direction. If you’ve got the budget you can create some amazing finishes with laser cutting – imagine a black invitation with a cut lace pattern and wrapped in a gold ribbon.

Ballroom Bliss. When you think of the setting for a masquerade party the ideal venue features a grand ballroom or dancefloor, high ceilings and stunning architecture and there are lots of venues in London that deliver on this brief. However you can easily set the scene in smaller venues and create an intimate boudoir setting with imaginative styling.

Sequined Memories. A masquerade party is one theme we suggest you go all out. Silk or velvet room drapes can transform any venue and set the mood. Candles, candles and more candles of all shapes and sizes are essential. Large bespoke themed props create drama and we love projecting mask images on walls and ceilings. Table centres can include glass vases filled with feathers and beads or gold candelabra whilst sequins scattered on tables will create some sparkle. Colour schemes to consider are royal blue and gold, black, gold and red, purple and green or black, white and silver. If you can’t imagine an event without flowers think cascades of deep crimson red roses and petals.

Dress to Impress.  The mask is the focus so make the wearing of one mandatory and encourage your guests to dress up in Black-Tie and costumes – though just be careful where you place your candles as when guests sashay across the dancefloor you don’t want anyone to come close to any flames; definitely the wrong sort of smoking hot! You can encourage dressing up by offering prizes for the best dressed.

Gluttony. Food is an integral part of a masquerade party. People eat with their eyes first and this theme suits opulent feasting so consider creating a display table that groans with food. Italian food works well to compliment Venetian Carnival celebrations. With candlelit lighting and guests wearing masks you need to make sure food is easy to eat – elegant to serve and to eat is the way to go. Try dark coloured rum cocktails, gorgeous finger foods, chocolate fountains with cubes of chocolate cake & strawberries and chilled chocolate mousse.

Waltzing The Night Away. Sadly in this day and age most of us don’t have the skills to waltz across a dancefloor. You can however create the sense of an aristocratic ball by hiring a string quartet for the evening or to set the scene upon arrival, whilst switching to more upbeat music later in the evening.

Revelry and Debauchery.  To ensure the evening is one of divine decadence chose entertainment throughout the evening that will keep guests enthralled and entertained. Make sure your musicians are suitably dressed in costume whilst other options include masked showgirls, ice sculptures, Venetian stilt walkers, magicians, casino tables and themed photobooths.  Finish the evening with a grand reveal where everyone has to remove their masks on the stroke of midnight.
