New venues with possibilities for events – big event possibilities – don’t come around that often in London where space is at a premium, so there the new galleries at Tate Modern are a welcome addition
Along with confirming their status as a world class art gallery the new gallery spaces at Tate Modern also provide the event industry with not just one but a multitude of new, prestigious event spaces all in one location.
Called the Switch House, the 64.5-meter-high tower features an exterior of latticed brickwork and folded surfaces, while its interior includes an assortment of overground and underground galleries, as well as a new roof terrace offering panoramic views of the city.
One of the goals of the design was that both the existing building and the new extension should feel like one gallery and this has certainly proved successful with indoor bridges on the first and fourth floor linking both sides of the gallery across the Turbine Gallery and providing a sense of symmetry to the building. However in terms of event spaces it would be a mistake to think of the gallery as just one venue; just like the range of art now displayed, the diversity of space on offer is astonishing.
Where to start? From breath taking views across London at the Viewing Gallery to the industrial interiors of the Tanks to the dedicated elegant spaces found on other floors, there really is something for everyone with event spaces suiting different sizes along with the opportunity to hire different areas of the building or take over the whole space for a real showstopper.
There are ten floors in the new building providing six key event spaces. Obviously the space that’s grabbing all the headlines is the Viewing Terrace on Level 10 with its iconic views of London. Here, inside and outside spaces combine to offer possibilities for the ultimate reception or dinner space for up to 150 guests and dinner for 80.
In addition there are a number of dedicated event spaces available on the Levels 2, 4 and 6 where the architectural design of high ceilings and beautiful brickwork really stands out and can provide space for up to 400 guests.
The ten storey extension sits on top of three underground concrete oil tanks, home to one of Evolve Event’s favourite spaces, The Tanks. Joined to the one of the new entrances is a beautiful concrete staircase which spirals down into this raw space with its industrial heritage; originally used as generators of electrical energy they are now used as a space to generate ideas. We love the possibilities this blank canvas offers and recommend it for conferences, product launches and unique parties for to 600 guests for a reception and 400 guests for a conference or dinner.
