4 Princelet Street
If only the walls could talk, what stories they would tell.
4 Princelet Street is an extraordinary piece of history preserved in London’s Spitalfields. Built for the owner of nearby Truman Brewery, the house is an 18th century yellow brick Georgian time capsule. The double fronted merchant’s house, conserved in its original condition from top to bottom, is one of the last of the original houses to be built on the street where dozens of French Huguenot families, escaping Catholic prosecution in France, settled in the streets of East London during the early 1700s.
Frequently used for shoots and filming – you’ll have seen it recently in ITV’s Vanity Fair – it’s rarely used for parties due to vulnerability of the interiors. However we were delighted this month to help our client host his 50th birthday celebration in this historic venue.
The original interior hides more than three centuries of stories so if you’re looking for a venue that is intimate and atmospheric then this is it. The house consists of 15 conserved rooms and is a fantastic space to explore and part of our brief was to help guests discover the hidden spaces.
Our client wanted to treat his guests to an un-typical party in a venue they hadn’t experienced before and to bring the venue and its history to life whilst celebrating a milestone birthday in style.
We arranged for guests to be welcomed into the ground floor by actors, a poet and silhouettist all dressed in theatrical Georgian costumes, who acted as servants escorting everyone to the bar for reception drinks and canapes. Our time-capsule menu featured historic delights such as Blackbird Pie, Pease Soup and even a version of Gruel. The emphasis was placed on presentation and engagement so our Working Class Treasure canape consisted of mini hessian money pouches, filled with venison stromboli bites & blackberry ketchup dipping sauce which guests opened themselves to reveal the food inside; Mother’s Ruin was served on wooden medicine spoons, with old glass bottles labelled ‘mother’s ruin’ and consisting of gin cured salmon in Hendricks gin, cucumber gel, Fevertree tonic gel, shaved horseradish and micro parsley.
Inside the house, clues were given to help guests find their way to various rooms in which they enjoyed songs and stories inspired by biographical details from the life of the birthday boy. Each story contained a clue to help the guests solve a riddle which ultimately granted them access to an audience with The Duchess, a beautifully crafted life-sized puppet.
The rooms were styled with tealights and vintage bottles of flowers and entertainment played out throughout the house including mind reading, fortune telling and film projections. For those that solved the clues a hidden secret bar revealed itself on the third floor, serving cocktails and the discovery of a Treasure Chest – an edible Ginger treasure chest filled with our honorable Georgian host’s treasures from around the globe, including homemade Aero, gold leaf and Chocolate truffles, white chocolate and rose truffles, homemade Nougat, spiced marshmallow and silver leaf truffles.
An extraordinary evening in an incredible venue.
